Panama Canal (19)

Panama Canal Zone, Panama Canal Zone, Panama

At the locks, the canal splits. Panamax ships go through the old locks. Really big, Neo-Panamax ships, go through the new locks (just opened in 2016).

In this picture you can see a large container ship in the new lock, immediately to the right of the Disney flag.

We will follow the smaller container ship on the right, through the old locks. The currents through the canal are multi-directional and powerful. Almost every ship is accompanied by multiple tugboats, which you can see around this ship.

I took all my Panama Canal pictures from the deck of the Disney Wonder as we cruised from the south (Pacific) end of the canal to the north (Atlantic) end. We were told to expect rain. It rains a couple of inches every week in Panama. But our passage was unusual: it started overcast, then became cloudy, but no rain.
